THE PLAN OF HAPPINESS: THE ATONEMENT

The Atonement by definition is this: "As used in the scriptures, to atone is to suffer the penalty for an act of sin, thereby removing the effects of sin from the repentant sinners and allowing them to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ suffered in Gethsemane and on the cross. He was the only one capable of making a perfect Atonement for all mankind. He suffered the penalty for our sins in Gethsemane and died on the cross. He took upon Himself the pains, sicknesses, temptations, afflictions, and infirmities of us all" (Preach My Gospel Pg 58)

From this definition we see that the Atonement is the single most important principle and event in the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It applies to you and to me. It is so personal and yet so universal. Let's explore this for a moment.

MORE THAN JUST SIN

Have you ever made a mistake? Have you ever felt heartache? Have you ever felt like you were tossed upon the waves of uncertainty? Have you ever had an infirmity that caused you to be brought down low? Have you ever felt sorrow, or loss?...I know that all of us have felt either some or all of these feelings at some point or another in life. The Atonement covers and is for all of these feelings and acts. A prophet in the Book of Mormon addresses this by saying:

"And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people..."(Alma 7:11-13)
